I became a strong advocate for children and families via my foster/adoption journey, beginning in 2008 when, as a single woman I fostered, then adopted three children. I advocate for common-sense policy and legislation regarding mental health services, foster care, adoption, and criminal justice reform.
I write a blog to document the issues our family has faced, in hopes it will help other families and build awareness. I am often contacted by other families regarding mental health resources, the complexities of the legal system, and parenting children of color. For any requests regarding these issues, including requests to speak to your company, group, or faith community, please email me at Shelley@shelleycadamy.com.
I’m launching a podcast soon, regarding the challenges of foster/adoption/mental healthcare. If you’d like to be interviewed, please complete this form.
If you, like me, would like some foster/adoption merchandise that is at least a little bit interesting, go here.
If you or someone you love is experiencing a mental health crisis:
- Call the toll-free Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) to speak with a trained crisis counselor 24/7 who will help identify mental health options in your local area.
- Text “NAMI” to 741741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor 24/7 via text.
- If neither of these options are successful search “mental health crisis hotline” and your city for other local resources.
- Please only call 911 as a last resort and if you are prepared for your loved one to enter the criminal justice system.
